Joel Schaan 出生於North Dakota，父親為混凝土工人，母親是護士。Joel Schaan 14歲時便在家附近的酒吧演奏結他，他的樂隊Wallace Hartley搬移到Minneapolis並重新為樂隊改名為Test Site 67。後來Joel退出Test Site 67，返回新奧爾良，在幾年間他的音樂風格作出巨大的轉變。專輯“Acoustic”的完成不單顯示Joel是一位出色的結他手，亦是創作豐富的作曲家，他的音樂令人想起Levon Helm、Bob Dylan。
